Robben holds Golden Boot advantage after RVP suspension

Published:

The race is well and truly on to win the Golden Boot in Brazil after Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben joined Germany’s Thomas Muller at the top of the World Cup goal chart after hitting a strike apiece in Holland’s 3-2 win over Australia.

The trio have now netted three goals each at the tournament with Muller still the 5/2 favourite with Ladbrokes having played just one game so far in Brazil.

But the Dutch pair are both hot on his tail and are available at 6/1 to finish top tournament goalscorer but it could be Robben who holds the advantage following events in Porto Alegre.

Just after half-time RVP picked up his second booking of the tournament for putting his hand in the face of Matthew Spiranovic, meaning he will now miss Holland’s final group game against Chile.

And with Spain’s conquerors looking to upset the odds once again in a bid to top the group, Van Persie’s absence could be a huge blow to Holland and his chances of claiming the Golden Boot.

Robben, who is now evens to finish as Holland’s top scorer in Brazil, will now have the chance to move ahead of his team-mate if he can manage to find the net against the Chileans and if he scores a priceless goal the 6/1 available on him will surely disappear.

Elsewhere, Mario Mandzukic threw his name into the hat to become this year’s World Cup top goalscorer after scoring twice in Croatia’s 4-0 win over Cameroon.

The Bayern Munich striker missed his side’s opening game against Brazil due to suspension but wasted no time in coming to the party and is now 25/1 to leave South America with the Golden Boot.

The Croatians now face a winner takes all clash against Mexico for a place in the second round and they will be hoping Mandzukic continues his goal scoring form long into the tournament.
