Oranje’s Rio path makes Man Utd target sexy bet for Golden Boot

Published:

The race for Brazil 2014’s Golden Boot is raging at the World Cup, with so many of the planet’s best marksman managing to step up to the plate at this goal-filled football bonanza.

Who will be crowned the tournament’s most prolific player though? Lionel Messi? Neymar? Karim Benzema? Thomas Muller?

There is certainly a case for picking either Argentina or Brazil’s main men. Both Messi and Neymar have lived up to their pre-World Cup billing by nudging ahead of the competition, racking up four goals from their three group games.

As such (before Group’s G and H have concluded) Argentina’s number 10 shades favouritism as the 2/1 market leader, ahead of his Brazilian opposite number at 11/4.

Of the half-dozen big hitters still left in the tournament and all currently on three, Germany’s Muller is the only man who is yet to complete a third match of the finals.

Therefore, allied with the fact that the Bayern Munich forward already has another sparkling, boot-shaped trophy from South Africa in his possession, the 11/2 on offer from Ladbrokes is not to be baulked at.

But, at a mighty 14/1, the tastiest punt of the lot has to be Muller’s Bayern teammate Arjen Robben.

The Holland jinkster has arguably turned in the performance of the tournament already, when deconstructing holders Spain alongside partner-in-crime Robin van Persie – a 10/1 shot.

But given Van Persie’s propensity for a suspension or an injury, the man rumoured to be on Louis van Gaal’s Manchester United wish list makes the most sense.

Robben’s appeal grows even greater when you consider Holland’s path to the final (should the Oranje take care of Mexico) will mean leapfrogging one of the two lowest ranked teams left in the competition.
