Man United misfit can still excel elsewhere after World Cup
Published:It was a deal which appeared to be brokered more out of desperation than choice by David Moyes last summer and barely 12 months later, it appears midfield misfit Marouane Fellaini will be put up for sale.
Having seen his reputation as a fearsome midfield enforcer come auxillary striker at Everton fed to the dogs at Old Trafford, Fellaini’s dream move to United now looks every bit like going the same way as the manager who brought him there.
It’s being mooted that the Belgian – whom Moyes paid an obscenely inflated £27.5m for at the 11th hour of the 2013 summer transfer window – will now be made available for just £15m.
The irony being that this is the figure that deposed United boss paid for Fellaini’s services when he first brought him to Everton from Standard Liege back in 2008.
In a season where the bushy-haired Belgian was made a scapegoat of the failures of Moyes’ new dawn, the midfielder was himself the victim of being asked to play in an unfamiliar role.
Instead of utilising Fellaini in a familiar advanced position, or as an out-and-out defensive spoiler, he became a fish out of water in a box-to-box capacity.
However, he’s still a well respected fixture in the Belgian national team – who are the 16/1 fifth favourites to achieve glory – meaning the 26-year-old can easily go onto brighter things away from Old Trafford next season.
If Belgium and Fellaini enjoy a successful tournament then suitors will not be hard to find and the Premier League is a division which seems to suit his physical attributes best.
Even if the very top teams have been put off by his United cameo, the likes of Tottenham, Newcastle, Southampton or even old club Everton could prosper from attaining his signature.
