Liverpool looking to Marseille and Ghana star for back-up

| 09.06.2014

Liverpool’s pursuit of a first-ever Premier League title could see the Reds launch a bid to bring highly-rated Olympique Marseille winger Andre Ayew to Anfield this summer.

The Merseysiders just missed out on the title last term, with Manchester City claiming top domestic honours for the second time in three years at the expense of the Reds

But with Liverpool securing Champions League football for next season, the campaign nevertheless represented a real success for Brendan Rodgers who is now looking to strengthen his squad ahead of another crack at the big prize

Rickie Lambert has already been recruited from Southampton for £4m while Emre Can and Alberto Moreno are expected to sign from Bayer Leverkusen and Sevilla respectively.

However, the biggest arrival could be yet to come, with Ghana stalwart Andre Ayew linked with a move to Liverpool today after the 24-year-old announced his intentions to depart the Ligue 1 giants.

Ayew is currently in the final year of his contract with L’OM and with the winger unable to agree a new deal at the club, could be sold this summer rather than being allowed to leave on a free.

Marseille would welcome any substantial offers for Ayew with newly-installed manager Marcelo Bielsa keen to begin the process of overhauling the current Marseille squad following a season in which the 1993 European Cup winners have disappointed both domestically and on the continent.

Liverpool could yet face competition for the Ghanaian’s signature though, with Newcastle United also keen on recruiting the Ligue 1 star this summer.

The Toon are thought to be considering tabling a bid after hitting something of a dead-end in their negotiations with Montpellier over midfielder Remy Cabella.

The Ligue 1 side are reportedly holding out for a bid in the region of £13m, with Newcastle’s current valuation some way below that figure.
