Istomin to end Wawrinka’s Wimbledon early again on Day 6

Published:

Grand Slam winner he might be, but on the green grass of Wimbledon Stanislas Wawrinka is a large, flapping fish marooned on dry land.

The Australian Open winner’s SW19 demise is the headline bet of our trio for the first Saturday of Wimbledon.

Denis Istomin to beat Stanislas Wawrinka @ 2/1

World number three Wawrinka may have proved he can mix it with the men’s elite players, but it’s fair to say he still doesn’t have a grass-court game-plan for the year’s third Grand Slam.

Stan has exited at the first-round stage the last three years and in four of the last five – though he did reach the giddy heights of round two in 2011.

His Uzbek opponent Istomin here in round three, sent the Swiss crashing out in 2010 at the first stage and reached the fourth round two years ago.

Considering Istomin just made the semis of Eastbourne as well, the underdog is too good a price to ignore for another scalp.

Sabine Lisicki to beat Ana Ivanovic 2-1 @ 4/1

Last year’s beaten finalist Lisicki clearly has unfinished business at Wimbledon. Having reached at least the quarters at SW19 on her last four appearances, including a semi-final defeat in 2011, we’re backing Lisicki’s pedigree to see her through.

Having won the recent Aegon championships, Avanovic is sure to make this one of the ties of the third round, but she often lacks the belief to go deep into Slams, with two hard-court quarter finals the Serb’s best efforts to date.

Zarina Diyas to win first set and match v Vera Zvonareva @ 11/10

20-year-old Diyas – the current world number 72 – is making a real splash at SW19 this year and the after seeing off 15th-seed Carla Suarez Navarro, she should have too much zip for 29-year-old Zvonareva, still on the comeback trail from a long injury lay-off.

Diyas has won her opening two matches after chalking up the first set and went all the way to the final of the grass-court challenger event in Nottingham after claiming the opener in each previous round.
