Froch all set for a Vegas payday after knocking out Groves

Published:

Carl Froch’s rematch with George Groves was the fork in the road of his career. Win and he’d be lauded as a true, great champion or lose and likely retire on a bum note.

As it turned out, Froch landed a devastating eighth round blow to his young rival that prolonged his fighting legacy and sent Groves tumbling to the floor.

The Nottingham native, who retained his WBA and IBF titles with the win, claimed a second, and undisputed, victory over Groves, who must now restart his career.

For Froch though, the party continues and Ladbrokes have priced up his next options, with a big-money Vegas shindig the most likely scenario for the 36-year-old.

Froch admitted a loss to Groves would have prompted his retirement, but the victory he so expertly put together earns him one last trip to the ring, if not two.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, is the market leader to be Froch’s next opponent according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes, with the fighter himself claiming a fight in Vegas remains as the one unticked boxes on his career’s bucket list.

Facing the Mexican is therefore the 6/4 favourite to be Froch’s next assignment, while it’s a 2/1 shot that him and DeGale enter the ring together.

DeGale won, and won well, on the undercard to the Wembley event and was in no doubt that the four-time world champion is firmly in his sights.

He may have to wait a while longer before locking gloves though, with Ladbrokes pitting another rematch with Andre Ward at 4/1 and 10/1 for Mikkel Kessler.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Froch has got one or two fights left in him, and whilst we can’t rule out a rematch with Ward, it looks more likely that Chavez Jr will be his next opponent.”
