England backed to attack in World Cup showdown with Uruguay
Published:A 2-1 defeat to Italy was a disappointing way for England to start the World Cup but there were plenty of positives to take away from that loss to the Euro 2012 finalists.
The most obvious of these was the level of attacking intent demonstrated by the Three Lions against arguably the strongest team in the group.
And while Cesare Prandelli’s team ultimately escaped with the victory, England could consider themselves extremely unlucky to not get a result and at the very least more goals against the Azzurri.
England managed an impressive 16 shots on goal against Italy compared with the 12 racked up by their opponents, with the Three Lions also managing more attempts on target with five compared to the Azzurri’s four.
While the likes of Wayne Rooney were guilty of missing their fair share of chances last time out, a fixture against inferior opposition in the form of Uruguay suggests England should be confident of scoring a big win over Luis Suarez and co.
La Celeste may have impressed at the last World Cup with a fantastic run to the semi-finals, but it’s important to note than even then, when many of the team were in their pomp, they still shipped nine goals in seven games in South Africa.
Uruguay conceded 25 goals in 16 games in qualifying – the joint worst record of the five South American teams that made the plane to Brazil – while a two-leg victory over a vastly inferior Jordan team flattered to deceive.
England can currently be backed at evens to score two or more goals against La Celeste and with Daniel Sturridge bringing his club form to the international stage, there’s every reason to back him.
The Liverpool man managed 24 goals in 33 games for the Reds, while his well-taken finish against Italy means the 24-year-old has scored three goals in his last four appearances for the national team.
Set to play with Manchester United top scorer Wayne Rooney in support, backing two or more goals could prove to be the bet of the day!
