Berdych backed to beat Cilic 3-1 in Wimbledon Day 5 best bets

Published:

On the fifth day of Christmas…errr….Wimbledon, there was lots more tennis to enjoy. We’ve taken it upon ourselves to carefully select three more choice punts to accompany the SW19 action.

Tomas Berdych to beat Marin Cilic 3/1 @ 5/2

2010 Wimbledon finalist Berdych is a worthy 2/5 favourite to progress past Cilic, whose best showing in SW19 remains a couple of fourth-round appearances.

The Czech leads the way 5-2 in head-to-heads, but don’t expect it to be a breeze for the world number six against this 6ft 6” big-serving Croatian, whose game has obvious appeal on grass.

Both men played out exactly four sets of tennis in their opening two matches as well.

Lauren Davis to beat Shuai Peng @ 8/13

Considering these two have never met this comes down to a mixture of youthful exuberance and grass-court exposure this season prevailing over experience.

At just 20, rising US star Davis enjoyed an impressive run at Eastbourne, upsetting 14th seed Sari Errani and Daniela Hantuchova, before losing to eventual winner Madison Keys in the quarters.

Davis also caused a shock in round two at Wimbledon, dumping out 12th seed Flavia Pennetta.

Her more battle-hardened Chinese opponent crashed out in the first round at Eastbourne.

Kevin Anderson to win the first set v Fabio Fognini @ 4/9

Anderson’s decision to play at the Aegon Championships will bode well in this match, which should be a corker between the South African world number 18 and Fognini, at 15.

Calling the contest as a whole you’d have to favour 1/3 shot Anderson, who won their only other grass-court clash.

However, away from the match odds there’s plenty of appeal in backing Anderson to win the opening set as well.

It’s a feat he’s achieved in rounds one and two at Wimbledon, whereas the Italian has lost the ice-breaker in both his preceding ties and in both previous meetings against this opponent.
