Arsenal eye first-choice France full-back to replace understudy
Published:Arsenal could be trading one France international right-back for another if the latest rumours are to be believed.
The hunt to replace Bacary Sagna has reportedly led Arsene Wenger to another Les Bleus World Cup squad member, only this time it’s their first-choice right-back Mathieu Debuchy being lined up to replace his international understudy.
Newcastle’s marauding defender is Didier Deschamps’ regular right-back and started both his nation’s opening two group games as well as the majority of their qualifiers for Brazil.
In fact, Toon eyes were first drawn toward signing their defender, after Debuchy’s standout performances for the French at Euro 2012.
But after a season which ended in disillusionment at St James’ Park for the 28-year-old, the former Lille player has been linked to various moves away from the north east as he apparently craves a return to Champions League football.
Arsenal had originally set their sights on snaring Toulouse full-back Serge Aurier, considered one of the brighter prospects in Ligue 1.
However, extended wrangling over valuations between the two clubs has put paid to that deal, leaving Wenger to recast his nets.
The Newcastle defender’s Premier League experience is an obvious plus point though Debuchy has his detractors.
It’s certainly perceived in some quarters that the Frenchman has failed to replicate his international form on a regular enough basis when pulling on a Newcastle jersey.
However, on his day, his raiding runs backed up by a strong physique depict him as the perfect Premier League full-back.
As yet, no prospective transfer fee has surfaced, but Newcastle are unlikely to let Debuchy leave lightly.
