World Cup Watch: Liverpool still intent on one of England’s gems

| 22.05.2014

If the paper talk is to be believed then it appears there won’t be a single nation present at this year’s World Cup which doesn’t contain a player that Liverpool are coveting.

It’s not particularly surprising given that the Reds have restored themselves among Europe’s elite for the start of the 2014/15 season and it’s no secret they must strengthen in a few different departments as a result.

Below are three players who will be on parade in Brazil and could certainly add some extra quality.

Adam Lallana – England – Midfielder

Liverpool may have hit a stumbling block over theirs and Southampton’s valuation of the silky playmaker, but Lallana is a player Brendan Rodgers is reportedly fully intent on signing.

While Lallana may end up costing a few million quid more than Liverpool want to pay for this technically gifted midfield maestro, the fact the player has stated his desire to move to Anfield over other high profile suitors weighs in their favour.

Lallana is a 5/6-shot to start in England’s opening Group D encounter against Italy.

Pedro – Spain – Forward

The Spain international has been an integral member of both the 2010 World Cup and 2012 European Championship winning sides notching 14 goals in 37 appearances for La Roja.

And given the 26-year-old’s club Barcelona, finished trophy-less this season it’s believed Pedro could be one of those new manager Luis Enrique is willing to let go.

The fact he can operate across the front three positions employed by Liverpool, makes his a particularly attractive prospect for Rodgers.

Marcos Rojo – Argentina – Left-Back

The Argentina left-back is a versatile defender who operates mainly at centre-half for his club Sporting Lisbon.

However, at 24, he’s in the perfect age bracket for Rodgers who has previously been linked with a move for Rojo with a view to playing him as a left back.

With Jose Enrique the only recognised left-sided full-back at the club, Liverpool desperately need some extra quality in that area.
