Switch to transfer-target B list not what Man United need
Published:Louis van Gaal’s appointment at Manchester United brought a renewed sense of hope that the club’s success in the transfer market would return to the norm.
Following two windows under David Moyes where Juan Mata was the only arrival to get Man United fans’ heart rate fluttering, the Dutchman’s pedigree was supposed to bring more regular high-calibre signings to Old Trafford.
Links with the likes of Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos certainly promised much, with Van Gaal’s stint as Bayern Munich manager thought to be an boost to the Red Devils’ chances of landing the pair.
However, as both players have recently distanced themselves with a switch to next season’s 5/1 Premier League hopefuls, it seems not much has changed since the days of Moyes.
The double rebuff has caused Van Gaal to move to his second-string of transfer targets and two men he’s picked for his 30-man provisional World Cup squad with Holland are the subjects of his averted attention.
Versatile defender Bruno Martins Indi and midfielder Jordy Clasie, who both play for Feyenoord, are the latest names to fill the Manchester United rumour columns, however, capturing the pair of 22-year-olds would be a mistake.
It’s not that either are bad players, they are just not what Van Gaal’s Man United revolution needs.
Both are young talents of the game, still learning their trade with no more than 100 senior appearances each.
As far as young players go, Man United are among the most well-stocked in the country and, as Ryan Giggs alluded to after the club’s final home game of the season, it’s in their nature to blood them.
Who’s to say that Martins Indi and Clasie would join the club and adapt to Premier League life better than say Michael Keane or Nick Powell?
And with Van Gaal a notorious youth-promoter, it seems counter-productive to buy them when it’s match winner’s in the mould of Muller and Kroos who he must try and lure to the Old Trafford project.
