Poyet and Pochettino step aboard managerial merry-go-round

| 12.05.2014

The dust may only just be settling on another Premier League season but, for those in the managerial dugouts, summer represents arguably the busiest time of year as the annual employment merry-go-round kicks into gear.

Some managers are put on gardening leave, others are sacked, while a select few get involved in the bizarre practice of job swapping as Harry Redknapp’s jaunt from Portsmouth to Southampton and back again demonstrates.

With that in mind, here are a few of the big names set to go for a spin over the next few weeks.

Pochettino to Tottenham Hotspur

Tim Sherwood may currently occupy the White Hart Lane dugout, but that hasn’t stopped the press speculating about a move for Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino, following an impressive season with the Saints.

The Argentine has hardly helped matters either with a series of coy and slightly cryptic quotes that suggest he may be open to their advances.

“I have the same goals, the same wishes … Of course I want to be successful, to be ambitious and always to improve as a manager,” he said before the weekend’s kick-offs.

“…when the game finishes with Manchester United a project of five years that has been happening will come to an end. It’s up the board to discuss with me the new project…”

Gustavo Poyet to West Ham United

The Uruguayan may have helped Sunderland to become only the second team in Premier League history to survive the drop having been bottom at Christmas, but reports suggest that the fiery South American has alreadyclashed with club owner Ellis Short.

With the pair set to discuss his future in the coming weeks, question marks remain over Poyet’s future, particularly if Sam Allardyce departs West Ham United this summer.

Irons fans are thought to be unhappy with the style of play at Upton Park and the Uruguayan may be tempted by the move, which would allow him to link up with his family who currently reside in London.

David Moyes to Newcastle United

Having lost seven of his last eight as Toon manager, Alan Pardew is under increasing pressure on Tyneside, with fans calling for a change of manager. Club owner Mike Ashley has so far stood by the former West Ham gaffer, but further unrest among the fans could force the Sports Direct owner’s hand.

And one man waiting in the wings is David Moyes, with the Scot no doubt keen to rebuild his reputation with a stint at the Magpies. Able to work to a budget, deliver consistent top 10 finishes and even European football, should Pards go, then the former Manchester United man may be the first choice.
