Newcastle among English duo tracking Bundesliga strike ace
A host of Premier League clubs are poised to pounce for Hertha Berlin star Pierre-Michel Lasogga, with his loan club Hamburg perilously close to relegation.
Hamburg were held to a 0-0 draw with Greuther Furth in the first leg of their relegation play-off decider and should they fall through the Bundesliga trap door all hope of landing the 22-year-old strike ace on a permanent deal will surely die.
This has put Newcastle and Tottenham on red alert with both the Magpies and Spurs in need of attacking reinforcements for the season ahead.
Newcastle are set to lose QPR loanee Loic Remy, with the Frenchman reportedly preferring a switch to the Emirates, while Tottenham appear keen to draw a line under their failed Erik Lamela experiment.
The Magpies are priced at 750/1 to win the Premier League next year – a bet only the looniest of Toon Army soldiers would consider – but if they are to improve on this season then Lasogga could be just the man they need.
The striker has bagged an impressive 13 goals in 22 appearances for Hamburg this year in a series of displays that have caught the eye of Alan Pardew and Daniel Levy.
With the Magpies standing by Pardew earlier this week and Spurs ditching Tim Sherwood it is the St James’ Park outfit that appear to be leading the chase.
A number of clubs from the German top flight and across Europe are keeping tabs on the former Bayer Leverkusen youth player, but if Lasogga’s mother is to be believed, he only has eyes for the Premier League.
“Pierre is under contract with Hertha Berlin. But those people who know Pierre in person are aware that playing in the English Premiership has always been one of his desires,” she told the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.
