Newcastle should chase this better Ligue 1 option over Gomis

Anyone who regularly scours the rumour sections of the world’s media will probably only need two days to figure out that the world of the transfer story is a monotonous one.

Serge Aurier, for example, is only 21-years-old, but has been linked to Arsenal for 20 of those. Similarly, Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis had been attracting Newcastle’s attention long before the club became one that doesn’t sign players permanently.

Having reportedly broken from their abstinence by putting ink to cut down trees in a deal for Spanish second division striker, Ayoze Perez, it seems the floodgates could be opening.

It’s no surprise therefore, to see Gomis linked with a St James’ Park switch. The Frenchman scored 22 times for Lyon in all competitions this season but missed out on a place at the World Cup, where France are 20/1 to win.

Having been a part of Les Gones’ setup since 2009, Gomis is set to become a free agent next month with the Magpies, who tried to land the player in the last two windows, circling.

It was never Lyon that got in the way of Newcastle’s pursuit of the player, though, and the 28-year-old’s astronomical wage demands are yet again causing problems.

A £100,000 per week request could well see the Geordie club miss their man for a third successive window, but there are plenty of other strikers around who Newcastle could snap up far cheaper.

Keeping Newcastle’s French-based recruitment policy in mind, Gomis’ Ligue 1 rival, Wissam Ben Yedder, is one player who could be brought across the Channel for far less cash.

At 23, Ben Yedder would be a better buy for Newcastle’s future and scored 17 times in all competitions for Toulouse this term, a tally that boasts more league goals than Gomis.
