With Mel gone Sherwood is the results-man West Brom crave
Published:After 17 Premier League games, just three wins and a slip from 14th to 17th in the table, West Brom have parted company with Pepe Mel by mutual consent.
Those three wins went towards just 15 points that the Spaniard accrued during his time at the Hawthorns and, having succeeded Steve Clarke earlier in the season following a similarly low win rate in 2013, he was always in danger of being cast aside.
Having now sacked two managers for disappointing win tallies – Clarke’s seven wins in 2013 equated to a 20 per cent win rate, while Mel’s was 16 – it leaves one stand-out candidate for the vacant managerial seat in the midlands.
As he’ll no doubt jump at the chance to tell you himself, Tim Sherwood’s record at Tottenham since succeeding Andre Villas-Boas has been unrivalled.
His win percentage in all competitions is only bettered by one Spurs man in the Premier League era (his predecessor) yet Sherwood looks set to be shown the door at White Hart Lane this summer.
At 6/1 his price is certainly worth some attention since the Baggies are clearly setting their hearts on someone who can deliver results, although whether the 28 games Sherwood managed Spurs for is a big enough sample size remains to be seen.
Malky Mackay is the market leader at 2/1 and, at the point he was disposed of by Vincent Tan at Cardiff, sat level on points with West Brom in the Premier League with 17.
Another Scot currently out of work is former Manchester United boss David Moyes, although at 6/1 it seems unlikely he’ll plump for a return to Premier League work with a team that sit below the league’s fold.
At the same price, Chris Hughton is a better bet considering his managerial career has been built on teams of West Brom’s ilk, at Norwich, Birmingham and a Championship-locked Newcastle, but having suffered the worst win percentage of his career with the Canaries, may be overlooked.
