Manchester United and Liverpool battle for Real Madrid star

Manchester United look set to renew their rivalry with Liverpool as the two clubs pursue moves for Real Madrid hotshot Karim Benzema.

Media reports suggest the Frenchman is considering a move away from the Bernabeu with those behind the scenes at the club believed to be open to the idea of letting the striker leave – for the right price.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a solid campaign with Los Blancos, scoring 24 goals in all competitions, but despite this haul he has still garnered criticism from some who have labelled him a big game bottler following a series of anonymous displays in key encounters this term.

And if reports from the Daily Mirror are to be believed, this group may well include manager Carlo Ancelotti who previously fought to keep the French star at the club over the summer but is now more open to a move.

One potential scenario would see Real Madrid move for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez in a cash-plus-player deal that would see Benzema move in the opposite direction.

It’s unclear as to whether the Reds would be open to such a move or even allowing the Uruguayan to leave, though the Merseysiders are thought to be on the lookout for another striker and, regardless of any Suarez agreement, may move for the former Lyon man anyway.

They will face some competition for the France international though, with Manchester United rumoured to be preparing a significant bid for Benzema.

With Louis van Gaal likely to be appointed Red Devils manager in the coming weeks, the Real Madrid man could head the list of potential signings as the Dutchman begins the rebuilding job at Old Trafford.

It all means that Benzema could yet be at the centre of a bidding war that pits old foes Liverpool and Manchester United against each other once again.
