Liverpool will face stiff competition to nab Chelsea freebie

| 20.05.2014

After eight years of routine for Ashley Cole – as England’s, Chelsea’s and the world’s best left-back – it’s suddenly all-change for the 107-cap international as he followed up the decision to retire from the national side by announcing his departure from the Stamford Bridge club.

Retirement doesn’t look to be on the cards just yet, as the 33-year-old tweeted he’s weighing up playing options for next season and gave a clear indication over the calibre of club he intends to join by posting that he’d be looking to win something at his next club.

So with silverware still at the forefront of Cole’s mind, we’ve picked out three potential giants he could join.

Turin’s powerhouse club are clearly in the market for a new left-back, having recently been linked with a move for Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

Cole is the same age as the Frenchman, but perhaps has displayed marginally better consistency in the twilight of his career, as seen in his composed performances against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

The Reds were surprise challengers to the Premier League crown this season and are 11/2 to go one better than their eventual second place finish next season.

With Aly Cissokho failing to seal himself a permanent switch after playing at left-back on loan this term, Brendan Rodgers will need a new signing in that department to provide competition to Jose Enrique.

If a slightly easier paced league is Cole’s preference, then France’s Ligue 1 should be a consideration.

Monaco finished nine points off Paris Saint-Germain’s pace come the end of the season and employed little-known academy graduate Layvin Kurzawa at left-back for much of the campaign.

Should Les Rouges et Blancs seek to bridge the gap between their rich rivals, then signing a Champions League winner should be at the top of the list.
