Chelsea willing to pawn Luiz in order to land Bayern striker

One thing that’s as clear as UKIP’s stance on the European Union, is that Chelsea football club will land at least one high-profile striker this summer.

Although Diego Costa is the one name which constantly crops up, events over in Germany could help Chelsea take a giant leap towards landing another of Europe’s heavyweight strikers.

With Borussia Dortmund hotshot Robert Lewandowski, finally set to complete his protracted move to Bayern Munich this summer, the future of Croation international Mario Mandzukic has come under the spotlight.

And this is where Chelsea’s Brazilian defender-turned-midfielder David Luiz enters the picture.

Reports have emerged that the Blues are willing to offer Luiz to Bayern, plus £15m, in exchange for Mandzukic; their top scorer in the Bundesliga of the last two seasons.

Although Luiz has been selected to represent 3/1 favourites Brazil for his home World Cup, he’s never been far away from speculation linking him with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

It’s believed his best position is in defensive midfield, but the arrival of Nemanja Matic and the return to fitness of Marco van Ginkel, who are both specialists for that position, render a switch all the more likely.

Although Luiz can also operate as a central defender, John Terry’s recent one-year contract extension and the arrival of young French centre-back Kurt Zouma would potentially see his opportunities further limited at the Bridge.

Meanwhile, it’s widely known from both his time at Barcelona and during his first season at the Allianz Arena, that Pep Guardiola prefers to play with only one recognised centre forward in any given system.

With Lewandowski now on the scene, the prospect of becoming Chelsea’s main man instead could well suit Mandzukic, who is also a target for Arsenal.
