Bayern flyer among fancies to sign for Man United under Van Gaal

It’s been coming for weeks but now news websites everywhere can prefix the announcement that Louis van Gaal is to be Manchester United’s new manager with the word ‘breaking’.

The 62-year-old was finally confirmed as David Moyes’ permanent successor, taking charge of the 2012/13 champions on a three-year deal.

Van Gaal’s arrival, once his stint as Holland manager at this summer’s World Cup is over, signals the end of Ryan Giggs’ time as interim United manager, although his days on the Old Trafford touchline aren’t numbered completely as he’ll be the Dutchman’s assistant next term.

The Welshman announced his playing retirement along with the news of Van Gaal’s appointment and the pair will be targeting a vast improvement on a title-defending season that saw the Red Devils finish seventh in the Premier League.

In order to achieve that improvement, the former Bayern Munich and Barcelona boss is likely to go on a recruitment drive over the summer, and Ladbrokes have priced up a number of potential arrivals.

Among the favourites to be in the cavalry, behind the 1/4-rated Luke Shaw, is Bayern Munich forwards Arjen Robben.

The Dutchman, who played under Van Gaal at Bayern Munich and in the colours of his national team, is 6/4 to join the Old Trafford club this summer, a price that puts him ahead of long-term United target and FCB teammate Toni Kroos, who is priced at 7/4.

Cesc Fabregas, who United failed to capture in Moyes’ first transfer window in charge, is priced up at 7/4 to have a change of heart now the more trophy-familiar Van Gaal is in charge.

Having won titles at every one of the four clubs he’s previously managed, the Amsterdam native’s successful record will surely have United fans hopeful of a return to winning ways and Ladbrokes go 11/8 that he wins at least one in his debut campaign.
