Arsenal don’t need signings to win the title just less injuries
Published:According to Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny, Arsenal will stand a better chance of winning next season’s Premier League if his manager, Arsene Wenger, goes out and recruits some new signings.
Having spent the most time out of any Premier League side on top of the tree this season, Arsenal have been subjected to a familiar feeling, ending proceedings in fourth spot rather than challenging for their most treasured piece of silverware.
In a recent interview, the Polish stopper offered up a whole host of reasons about where it was won and lost for his north London side in the title race and believes that with a couple of new faces the Gunners can once again have a crack at lifting the trophy.
Arsenal are 9/1 outsiders to be crowned champions in 2014/15, but it’s not a successful foray into the transfer market that’s key to the Emirates club landing that bet, it’s keeping their current crop out of the physio room instead.
As we’ve highlighted, Arsenal’s squad this season was clearly adequate enough to sit at the top of the Premier League, but capitulated when a number of their top performers became crocked.
Aaron Ramsey was the most felt absence, as the Welshman sat out more than three months of the season with a thigh complaint.
With the goal-scoring midfielder in their side, Arsenal won 68 per cent of their matches in all competitions. When he was missing, the Gunners triumphed just 54 per cent of the time.
It wasn’t just missing the performances of the breakout midfielder that cost Wenger’s side dearly, Theo Walcott won 10 of the 13 games he started this season, but his side’s win rate dropped from a huge 77 per cent to just 56 when he wasn’t available for selection.
Jack Wilshere, Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all also spent periods of time on the treatment table and, should they all remain fit next term, would seriously boost the Gunners’ title bid next term.
