The £15m option Man Utd need to sort out lack of midfield goals
Links with new central midfielders will almost certainly continue right through to the closing of the summer transfer window at Old Trafford.
It is the heavy hitters from some of Europe’s elite that have caused the biggest stir in recent months, with Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos and Cesc Fabregas of Barcelona both said to be on the Man Utd radar.
Either of these would be a fine acquisition, but a less talked about name that could prove just as influential to strengthening the Man Utd midfield is Remy Cabella.
One area where the Red Devils have particularly suffered this season is their goals contribution from midfield, as none of their recognised central midfielders have managed more than a single goal.
Compare this to the likes of Yaya Toure, Steven Gerrard and Aaron Ramsey and it is clear when Man Utd have been left behind.
Cabella is the highest scoring midfielder in Ligue 1 this season with 14 goals, while he has also provided five assists to his Montpellier teammates.
This tally means that the 24-year-old has contributed to almost half of Montpellier’s league goals this season and this has almost single-handedly kept them in the French top-flight, as they are still only five points above the drop with two fixtures remaining.
To add extra context, Cabella’s total of 39 shots on target this season is only four fewer than Wayne Rooney.
It has all but been confirmed that Cabella will be allowed to leave Montpellier this summer, with a fee of £15m expected to be enough to secure his signature.
Newcastle have been long-term admirers of the uncapped Frenchman and he has been earmarked as a worthy replacement to fellow playmaker Yohan Cabaye.
However, there has been some suggestion that Alan Pardew wants to buy English rather than continuing to scour the French market, which may open the door for Man Utd to step in.
