Van Gaal can revive ailing Lamela’s Spurs fortunes if appointed
Published:The future of Tottenham’s record signing and simultaneously biggest enigma, Erik Lamela, hangs in the balance after a torrid first season in English football.
Having cost a king’s ransom in the summer as part of the Gareth Bale-replacement drive, expectations levels surrounding Lamela were understandably raised sky-high for Spurs fans.
As it’s since transpired, the former Roma star has gone about flopping like the ears of a basset hound in his first season at White Hart Lane, despite showing flashes of brilliance in a couple of Europa League cameos.
However, a string of injuries are thought to be largely to blame for such minimal exposure during his first season in English football and a potential change in the Spurs dugout this summer could yet revive the fortunes of Lamela as a Spurs player next season.
If rumours are to be believed, Tottenham’s chairman Daniel Levy has already lined up outgoing Dutch national team coach Louis Van Gaal to take over from current boss Tim Sherwood.
Where Sherwood has expressed his desires to offload the likes of summer recruit Lamela from the playing staff next season, Van Gaal is reported to be happy to work with what the club already have.
And having spent in excess of £30m on the Argentine winger, this will be music to the ears of Levy and the other money men at the club, whose embarrassments could be saved if Van Gaal can work his magic.
Gilet-sporting Sherwood looks set to be handed his P45 if as is widely expected that he fails to get Spurs into the top-four.
The former Blackburn player is now the odds-on favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave, at 8/13 with Ladbrokes.
