Real Madrid keen on Man United target Toni Kroos

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Bayern Munich star Toni Kroos this summer have been dealt a blow amid interest from Real Madrid.

The Germany midfielder was reportedly set on a switch to Old Trafford after growing frustrated at being below Bastian Schweinsteiger in the Bayern pecking order, but interest from the La Liga giants could yet turn the 24-year-old’s head.

United – 33/1 outsiders to reach the Premier League’s top four this term – are said to be willing to break the bank, both in terms of transfer fee and salary, to land their man despite a potential lack of Champions League football.

Bayern are reluctant to sell but Kroos’ desire to be the focal point of a team has led him to confide to friends and family in recent weeks that his heart is set on a move to Manchester.

This could all be set to change, however, after Madrid ruled themselves out of a summer bid for Ilkay Gundogan as a result of the Dortmund star’s injury concerns and instead made Kroos their number one target.

United’s £40m valuation of Kroos and the offer of £200,000 per week will not deter the La Liga outfit, who are known for shelling out huge amounts to lure stars to the Bernebeu.

Real are practically guaranteed to be playing Europe’s top competition next year – currently priced as 12/5 second favourites for the Spanish title – and the chance to hook up with the likes of Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo could prove too good to turn down for the German.

It wouldn’t be the first time United Manager David Moyes has publicly missed out on a big target but all is not lost.

If Kroos does opt for Spain, at least the Red Devils boss will have a straight run at the injury-prone Gundogan!
