Olivier Giroud’s price to score first against Newcastle boosted

Only three Premier League games stand between much-used Olivier Giroud and a well-earned rest, but before he’s able to stick his feet up he has the chance of earning Ladbrokes customers some extra cash against Newcastle.

The French striker, who is the north London club’s leading striker in the top-flight, has seen his odds to score the first goal of the game against Newcastle boosted from 7/2 to 4/1.

That enhancement still sees the former Montpellier man hold favouritism in the market, but it’s a chalice he must now share with fellow Gunners striker Yaya Sanogo.

It’s unlikely the young striker will get the nod in the starting line-up over Giroud though, with Arsene Wenger still not guaranteed Champions League football next season despite being strongly fancied at 1/33 in the top-four betting.

Giroud has notched 14 goals in the Premier League this term, five more than Aaron Ramsey who is next on the list, and his chances of finding the net again are boosted by the fact that the match is at the Emirates.

Eight of those 14 league strikes have come in north London, while Newcastle have been especially accommodating to first goal backers of late.

The Geordies have conceded the first goal in four of their last five games and did so the last time they played Arsenal, in the reverse fixture earlier in the season.

That game saw Giroud score the first, and only, goal of the match and was one of seven strikes this term that saw a punt on him breaking the deadlock payout.

What’s more, only three teams have been better than the Gunners at getting the scoreboard moving this term, with Wenger’s side putting the ball in the net first in 60 per cent of their matches this season.
