Napoli could offer much-maligned Man City defender new home
Manchester City’s veteran defender Martin Demichelis has probably played more than he would have expected this season and, in doing so, has been cast as the Etihad’s pantomime villain at times.
‘Not the quickest’ through to ‘down right rubbish’ is probably a fairly accurate representation of the two ends of the derision spectrum levelled at Demichelis during his maiden City campaign.
However, the former Bayern Munich centre-back is arguably undeserving of some of the band-wagon abuse he receives and his performances for City this season appear to have struck accord in Naples.
The latest gossip on the wire is that Napoli would be willing to take Demichelis off their hands should City decide to sell him on this summer.
Whether or not the Citizens win the Premier League this season, where they remain the 8/11 favourites, may yet have a bearing on the club’s decision.
Whatever some fans’ opinions are of the pony tail-sporting central defender, 19 league starts and 27 competitive appearances all told, mean his contribution to City’s cause has not been small.
The fact he is a player which Manuel Pellegrini has brought with him from his stint at Malaga shows the sort of faith the Chilean has in the centre-back.
A four-time Bundesliga winner in his prime at Bayern, it’s fair to say the 33-year-old’s best days are behind him though, while it’s almost certain City will replenish their defensive stocks even if Demichelis stays.
January saw an audacious swoop for Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala rebuffed, but it would be no surprise to see the Citizens renew their interest in the highly sought-after Frenchman.
Meanwhile, Joleon Lescott’s proposed departure could yet be another reason for City to hold on to Demichelis this summer.
