McIlroy to finally land elusive Tour win at Wells Fargo C’ship

Given Rory McIlroy seems to head the betting at every tournamenthe enters, yet hasn’t recorded a single PGA or European Tour triumph since 2012, it would be no surprise if punters had long since avoided the Ulsterman in the same fashion Superman dodges Kryptonite.

However, those much-discussed on-and-off course problems which plagued the two-time Major winner throughout 2013 – not least his failure to adapt to new equipment – have given way to a rapidly-improving McIIroy in 2014.

Having pieced together four top-ten finishes from the half-dozen events he’s played this season, including a runner-up spot at the Honda Classic and most recently seventh at the Masters, Rory is finally ready rumble once again.

There is no better stop on the PGA Tour calendar for the 7/1 market principal to return to winning ways than the Wells Fargo Championship at North Carolina’s famous Quail Hollow Club.

The scene of McIlroy’s breakthrough victory back in 2010, the then 20-year-old announced himself to the world by shooting a course-record 62 in his final round to scoop the trophy.

Since that landmark win, McIlroy came within a whisker of another title when losing a play-off in 2012 and posted a T10 finish last year, despite all his troubles.

Outside of R-Mac, this event has been dominated by winners hailing from the United States, where McIlroy’s 2010 triumph sits on its lonesome between seven stateside victories.

Despite not winning here, 14/1-shot Phil Mickelson’s is the course’s all-time leading earner and cannot be dismissed, while 33/1 chance Rickie Fowler is also a former winner.

Further down the betting it could be worth taking a chance on course member Webb Simpson at 40/1 (T4 in 2012) or perhaps 50/1 Kevin Na, 11th at the recent Valero Championship and fifth here in 2011.
