McIlroy targets better performance at Wentworth

Rory McIlroy has revealed he will take part in the European Tour’s flagship event next month and the Northern Irishman has targeted his first ever victory at the BMW PGA Championship.

The 24-year-old, who has just slipped outside the world’s top 10, has rediscovered some form this year with three top 10 finishes in his five European Tour starts so far in 2014.

But often the two-time Major winner’s performances at Wentworth have flattered to deceived, but the world no. 11 is targeting an improved performance at the Surrey-based course.

“I have been a little hit and miss at Wentworth, but I think this year my game is in much better shape” said McIlroy.

“Some of the greats of the game have won the title over the years and it would certainly be nice to join them on the Championship’s 60th anniversary.”

McIlroy will have to improve upon the poor form which saw him struggle throughout 2013 if he is to come out on top of a star-studded field featuring the likes of US Open Champion Justin Rose, Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter, two-time runner-up Lee Westwood, Sergio Garcia and last year’s Race to Dubai winner Henrik Stenson.

But with the former US Open and US PGA Championship champion rediscovering his touch he could be worth following at Wentworth.

The European Ryder Cup star is back in action across the pond this weekend at the Wells Fargo Championship on a course he knows very well.

McIlroy announced himself to the American golfing public with a final round 62 to claim his maiden win on the US Tour lifting the Quail Hollow Championship and he is the 7/1 favourite with Ladbrokes for a repeat performance at the North Carolina course.

Phil Mickelson (14/1), Westwood (14/1) and Rose (16/1) are also near the head of the market and will provide McIlroy with stiff competition over the week at the Quail Hollow club.
