Manchester United star christens Giggs the “new Guardiola”

There is growing support among those behind the scenes at Manchester United for midfielder and current interim manager Ryan Giggs to land the top job permanently.

The latest name to lend their endorsement to the Welshman is goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard, who was positively gushing in his assessment of the 40-year-old.

It comes in the wake of Manchester United’s impressive 4-0 win over Norwich City, a victory that saw them get back on track following a disappointing 2-0 loss to Everton that ultimately cost manager David Moyes his job.

And while Louis van Gaal remains the overwhelming favourite to take over the Red Devils hotseat, Lindegaard’s comments are likely to only fuel the campaign behind making Giggs manager.

Writing on his blog, the Dane extolled the virtues of the midfielder-cum-coach, who had little in the way of experience prior to taking charge of the team for their crushing defeat of the Canaries.

“It might sound pretty rash and naive, but, in my opinion, we are dealing with a new Guardiola,” he said.

“The similarities with Sir Alex Ferguson are striking and it is evident that Ryan Giggs has learnt from one of history’s most respected football managers.”

It’s unknown as to whether those behind the scenes share this sentiment though, with many eager to appoint an experienced coach following the Moyes debacle.

However rumours persist that Sir Alex Ferguson himself has given his backing to Giggs.

Much could ultimately depend on the form of the Red Devils over the course of the remainder of the season, with the Welshman targeting maximum points from their remaining two fixtures, a tally that could see the club secure Europa League football next term.

It’s also questionable that, with such a major overhaul of playing staff required in the summer, Giggs would be the man the United board would be willing to back to spend big in the summer transfer window.

United are next in action against Sunderland in the Premier League with the Black Cats still fighting to avoid relegation.

Giggs can currently be backed at 5/1 with Ladbrokes to be named the next permanent manager of Manchester United while Van Gaal is the favourite at 2/9.
