Manchester City preparing for summer defensive triple-swoop

Manchester City look set to step up their efforts in the transfer market this season with moves for two defenders and another defensive midfielder.

The move comes following a season in which the Sky Blues have impressed going forward but proven frail at the back with a series of costly errors and surprise defeats that have ultimately served to make the title race something of a close run thing

That could change from next season, however, with the Citizens rumoured to be launching a €45m bid to bring Porto pair Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando to the club.

According to a report from the Daily Telegraph the club are keen to land the highly-rated defender and defensive midfielder as part of a summer of defensive recruitment at the Etihad.

City actually came close to landing the two players back in the January transfer window, only for the deal to fall apart at the last minute.

However there should be few stumbling blocks this time, with the pair set to move as part of the blockbusting deal reported just days after it was revealed that the club would face sanctions under the new Financial Fair Play rules.

They may not be the only new recruits to the club either, according to the Telegraph, with Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna also edging towards the Etihad.

The Frenchman turned down his most recent offer of a contract from the Gunners and with City willing to meet his pay demands, a move to Manchester looks increasingly likely.

Manuel Pellegrini’s overhaul of the Citizens’ defence may not finish their either, with some reports suggesting that the Chilean was mulling over a potential goalkeeper swap deal with Tottenham Hotspur whereby Joe Hart would move to White Hart Lane in exchange for Hugo Lloris.
