Man United rebuild reliant on flexing financial biceps
Published:Yet again the transfer-news sphere is bulging with claims that big names are to be tempted to Old Trafford by the lure of pocket-swelling wages, as Manchester United look to reclaim their place among world football’s elite next season.
Given United’s unprecedented success over the last 25 years, this has never seemed too much of a problem in the past, as up until now there’s only been a handful of clubs with the pulling power of the Red Devils in world football.
But bereft of Champions League involvement for the first time in the Premier League era, for once, United will be more reliant on their financial clout than reputation when the transfer window reopens.
A sixth-place finish to ensure Europa League football in 2014/15 is about the best United can hope for following a torrid campaign, though scant consolation for David Moyes’ side may be found in the fact they’re on course to record the best Premier League away record, priced at 23/20.
The names which keep surfacing in connection with United moves are Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos and Southampton’s hottest property, Luke Shaw.
And if the latest reports are to be believed then Kroos will have a £260,000 per week contract waved under his nose, as Moyes has identified the 24-year-old German international as his marquee target.
Meanwhile, in a bid to blow Chelsea out of the reckoning when it comes to Saints’ precocious 18-year-old left-back, it’s being suggested that United will offer the south coast club £30m to procure Shaw’s services.
As long as FIFA’s proposed Financial Fair Play measures remains a mystery in the background of modern football dealings, it seems the big money will still get splashed regardless.
Faced with such an extensive rebuilding programme at United, it appears the Glazers won’t be shy when it comes to giving Moyes the necessary dosh to go after the stellar names.
