Man City’s Aguero the value first-goal pick after price boost
Sergio Aguero bagged a cracking 10 goals in eight games for Man City between December and January, and with the striker clearly coming back to form since returning from a third injury layoff of the campaign Ladbrokes have stuck their necks out by boosting his first-scorer odds from 5/2 to 3/1 when Manuel Pellegrini’s side host West Brom.
Aguero laid on a gilt-edged chance for David Silva to take the lead at 2-2 against Liverpool, seven minutes after coming on for just his fourth appearance since late January, and first since they went out of the Champions League at the Camp Nou in mid-March.
The 25-year-old returned to the first XI last time out against Sunderland, setting up midfield-enforcer Fernandinho for the opener with just two minutes on the clock, but the subsequent 2-2 draw was akin to a loss for City and they must do it all again against the Baggies merely to stay in the title race.
Premier League leaders Liverpool are now 1/7 for their first title since 1990 following Chelsea’s shock loss at home to the Black Cats, with City now all the way out to 5/1, but Pellegrini’s men don’t look quite finished just yet.
The Reds will fancy their chances of victory against Jose Mourinho’s men next time out at Anfield, but Chelsea have already beaten the Citizens – who would reclaim status as the top flight’s best home team with a 1/4 win against West Brom – on their own turf this term.
Brendan Rodgers won’t be taking three points for granted against his former mentor, while a trip to Crystal Palace looks more and more difficult with each passing Eagles win – the 1-0 at West Ham was their fifth success on the bounce.
For City, atoning for their mistakes against Sunderland is imperative if they wish to make a race out of what’s quickly becoming a title procession with three weeks to go, and they need Aguero – who’s started 26 games and scored 26 times for his club this term – to get back to what he does best.
The Baggies, who have only lost one of their last five fixtures, are 11/1 to win for the third time in four away days, with the draw 11/2.
