The great Man United clearout: Who stays and who goes?

Defeat to Bayern Munich ended Manchester United’s faint hopes of silverware for this season, while also closing the European chapter of several Red Devils careers.

A tearful Nemanja Vidic realised as much as he trudged off the Allianz Arena pitch, while Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra are also unlikely to kick a Champions League ball for the Old Trafford outfit ever again.

In fact, as United boss David Moyes looks to rebuild a squad that now stands at 33/1 for a top four finish, as many as 11 current players could be axed this summer.

Here we take a look at who stays and who goes.

Goalkeepers

With 47 appearances during Moyes’ 50-game reign no one has started more matches than David de Gea. The Spaniard has been the club’s best player this term and is going nowhere.

Anders Lindegaard is good enough to be a number one elsewhere but with the manager focused on problems elsewhere, the Dane looks set to remain for at least another season.

Ben Amos, however, has continually been sent on loan and at 24-years-old, it’s probably best for all concerned if the Englishman stakes a claim elsewhere.

Staying: David de Gea, Anders Lindegaard

Defenders

Nemanja Vidic has agreed terms with Inter Milan and there is a growing belief that Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra will follow him out of the Old Trafford exit door.

They are not the only likely candidates, however, as Moyes’ rating of Alex Buttner – or lack thereof – could mean both first team left backs are sold in the window.

United have been strongly linked with a move for Southampton’s Luke Shaw, but another left back could also be on the list if both senior men depart.

Staying: Rafael, Johnny Evans, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling

Midfield

The most problematic area of Moyes rebuilding task as players will need to be sacrificed before new recruits can come in.

Juan Mata and Adnan Januzaj can put their feet up this summer safe in the knowledge that they are going nowhere but there are question marks everywhere else.

Ryan Giggs is said to have fallen out with Moyes behind the scenes and while it is hard to imagine the Welshman playing elsewhere the spat could yet spur him to retirement.

Michael Carrick has earned the chance to be part of the new-look squad, while Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young look destined to remain.

Nani, however, will angle for an exit despite his new contract after being continuously overlooked for a starting berth, while the penny might finally drop that Wilfried Zaha and Tom Cleverly are not the future.

United have stood by Darren Fletcher during his return to health and the Scot could now be keen on more game time for the remainder of his career, while Shinji Kagawa might be used as bait to land new stars.

Perhaps most controversially though, Marouane Fellaini, who has failed to make the grade, could be axed as Moyes looks to show a new ruthless side in his pursuit of success.

Staying: Juan Mata, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, Adnan Januzaj (and maybe) Shinij Kagawa

Forwards

After signing a monster new deal and leading United in goals and assists (with 17 each) Wayne Rooney is staying put and will go on to break the club’s scoring records regardless of the team’s overall success.

The underrated, while sometimes wasteful, Danny Welbeck is a local lad and will be allowed to grow into an Old Trafford star over the coming years.

That’s as far as the striking certainties go, however, with question marks hanging over both Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

RVP is still one of the deadliest strikers around but United have arguably played better in his absence this term and the Dutchman could be moved on to facilitate other players this summer.

Chicharito is one of the best-loved players at Old Trafford but the Mexican is never going to get the minutes he desires and deserves in a Red Devils shirt and looks set to reluctantly move on in the coming months.
