England In-Form XI: Spurs man’s Monday night mastery not enough

Published:

It may be a day later than usual but, unfortunately for Harry Kane, the rules of the now famous England in-form XI haven’t changed.

Having shone for Tottenham on Monday night football against Sunderland, the England youngster can’t force his way into the best 11 Englishman of the weekend by virtue of the fact that his performance came too late.

Luckily for the 50/1 World Cup hopeful, Roy Hodgson probably won’t take such a strict view when naming his final 23 for Brazil, but he’d be wise to consider these on-song lads:

In a regular rotation of the keepers it’s Ben Foster’s turn to take a stint between the sticks after a clean sheet in a crunch relegation battle against Norwich. The former Manchester United man is 8/13 to travel to Brazil.

Leighton Baines, a 1/20 certainty to make the squad, is the only England regular in a back four that contains regular graphic appearance-makers Joel Ward (33/1), John Stones and Curtis Davies (both 16/1).

In midfield, Liverpool and England’s captain fantastic continues to thrive in his new deep-lying role and is 1/33 to lead the national side in Rio. He’s joined by 20/1-shot Steve Sidwell who turned in a true box-to-box performance in Fulham’s pivotal victory over Aston Villa.

Despite being named a substitute in the top-four shaping battle between Everton and Arsenal, Ross Barkley got an early introduction to proceedings after Leon Osman’s injury. Deployed in a more reserved role to normal, the 1/2-chance put on a passing show.

A new name lines up on our wing after Jason Puncheon (33/1) terrorised Cardiff’s defence for Crystal Palace. Adam Lallana’s bright display in defeat against Man City sees him get a start on the opposite flank while Andy Carroll perhaps strode ahead of Rickie Lambert in the striking pecking order despite the pair being equally rated at 11/8.
