Dortmund ready to save Fulham’s blushes over flop signing
Published:Fulham must have expected to achieve Premier League safety easily when they signed Champions League hot-shot Kostas Mitroglou from Olympiacos for £12m in the January transfer window. Just two appearances later though, he could be walking out the door.
Under their third boss of the season, Fulham have been relying on youngsters like Cauley Woodrow to lead their line rather than the more experienced options of Darren Bent or the man known as Mitrogoal.
The Greek international’s injury problems haven’t helped Mitroglou settle into life at Craven Cottage but, with Felix Magath’s side 2/5 to be relegated to the Championship this season, he may not have to acclimatise too much more.
Over in Germany, Borussia Dortmund are losing leading striker Robert Lewandowski to Bayern Munich in the summer and as a result are on the hunt for a replacement.
Having scored 21 times in 23 appearances for club and country before heading to England, Mitroglou proved himself to be a lethal striker at all levels and as such has played himself firmly onto Jurgen Klopp’s shopping list.
Should the Cottagers fail in their survival bid then prising the 26-year-old away from a second-tier side should be no problem for the guaranteed Champions League participants.
The former Olympiacos man’s hat trick against Anderlecht in the group phase of this year’s competition was a small taste of what he’d capable of at the highest level.
Dortmund would surely be able to pick Mitroglou up at a snip of the £12m Fulham paid for him should the west London club fall through the Premier League trap door too.
Fulham would have no qualms over losing the Greek either, as Woodrow has proved himself as a bright prospect in Mitroglou’s absence.
Recouping any fraction of the outlay forked out on the 28-capped international would surely be at the top of their summer’s priority list having seen so little from him in his two appearances.
