Diame behind at least three midfielders Liverpool should covet
There may well have been a time when Mohamed Diame was being coveted by Liverpool, but the West Ham midfielder’s latest comments smack a little of desperation after a pretty hit-and-miss season for the Hammers.
Speaking ahead of West Ham’s midweek Premier League trip to face Arsenal – where his current club are the big 7/1 outsiders for a shock Emirates win – Diame appeared to link himself with a move to table-topping Liverpool.
The 26-year-old said: “Liverpool? I can’t tell you if I will be a Liverpool player next season. But I think my name is still on their wanted list.
“I don’t hide it, I’m ambitious and I want to join a top-six side. I am 26 years old and it’s time to take that step.”
Given the Senegalese box-to-box merchant has enjoyed mixed reviews for the Hammers this season he may just have to think about tailoring those ambitions slightly in the summer.
Below are three centre-mids far more likely to be on Brendan Rodgers’ radar during the recess.
Yann M’Vila – Rubin Kazan
The former Rennes defensive midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Merseyside in January and his name is sure to crop again when the transfer window jumps back into life.
The Frenchman has got the tenacity and engine required for Liverpool’s high-pressing game.
Ivan Rakitic – Sevilla
Sevilla’s 26-year-old Croatian midfielder has been a revelation in La Liga this season, scoring 13 times for the Europa League semi finalists.
Although he could yet feature in a European showpiece for the Spanish club, Sevilla have a tough challenge making the Champions League spots this season and as such Rakitic could potentially be lured away.
Koke – Atletico Madrid
The Manchester United target was Atletico’s Champions League hero against Barcelona and the young Spanish international is now coveted all over the continent.
It will take something special to prise him away from La Liga, but joining up with possible Premier League champions may just appeal.
