Danish defender offers Spurs solution to Premier League woes
Published:As Sunday’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Liverpool demonstrated, Spurs are in dire need of improvement defensively and that process could start this summer with the recruitment of Simon Kjaer.
Tottenham are now a distant 40/1 to finish in the fop four this season, with the Lilywhites eight points behind Arsenal, the team currently occupying that final coveted Champions League spot.
They remain 1/2 favourites to end the campaign in the top six, however with Manchester United back in form in the Premier League and just two points off the Londoners, it could yet prove to be a disastrous season for Tim Sherwood’s team.
David Moyes’ men are 19/20 to finish in the top six and given Tottenham’s recent defensive woes, it represents a realistic aim for the Scot’s difficult first season at Old Trafford.
Spurs have conceded two or more goals in five of their last six competitive games, including 4-0 defeats to the Merseysiders and Chelsea with the likes of Younes Kaboul and Michael Dawson coming in for criticism following their recent displays.
It could all clear the path for a move for Kjaer who is currently plying his trade at Lille following a nomadic start to his career that saw him enjoy spells at Palermo, Wolfsburg and AS Roma before moving to France.
The Dane has featured 27 times for the Ligue 1 club and played an instrumental role in helping goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama keep a record 11 consecutive clean sheets in the division, going 1,062 minutes without conceding a goal.
That defensive solidarity has continued throughout the campaign, with Lille keeping clean sheets in three of their last four league fixtures and it’s little wonder that teams are beginning to sniff around the club’s back line star.
At 25 years of age, Kjaer certainly has time on his side and could be the kind of acquisition to give Spurs the solid base required to launch a top four bid next term.
No fee has yet been mentioned but with the Dane previously commanding fees of up to £10m, Tottenham could be forced to break the bank in order to get their man.
