Chelsea out of Shaw race but will battle United for PSG ace

Chelsea have bowed out of the race to sign Southampton left-back Luke Shaw but will battle Manchester United all the way in their pursuit of Edinson Cavani.

That is according to the latest rumblings on the rumour mill, which claim the Blues have given up any hope of luring Shaw to Stamford Bridge amid reports United are set to offer a £30m transfer fee and wages of £100,000 per week to land the 18-year-old.

The Red Devils appear to have stolen a march on their rivals despite currently being without a permanent manager but in a twist of irony, it is said to be the work of now-former United boss David Moyes that persuaded Shaw his future lies at Old Trafford.

However, while Chelsea – 9/2 outsiders to win the Champions League – have admitted defeat on this particular transfer they are prepared to fight tooth and nail with United to land PSG ace Cavani.

The Uruguayan is on an extensive wish list drawn up by United chief executive Ed Woodward and the French league leaders are supposedly ready to part with the unsettled striker.

Cavani has regularly found the back of the net in his debut Ligue 1 campaign but after growing tired of playing out wide to accommodate Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is said to covet a move to the Premier League.

This has put United on red alert but Chelsea’s more pressing need for striking reinforcements means a transfer saga of epic proportions could be in the offing.

Blues manager Jose Mourinho has alienated practically all of his striking options by deeming Rumelu Lukaku and Victor Moses surplus to requirements and questioning the age of Samuel Eto’o and the ability of Demba Ba and Fernando Torres.

As such any or all of the aforementioned forwards could leave west London this summer and as such Mourinho will be going all out to tempt Cavani to the capital.
