Cavani’s Man United preference brings RVP’s future into doubt

Published:

Only a season after joining big-spending Paris St-Germain, £55m striker Edinson Cavani is angling for a move away from the French capital and Manchester United is said to be his preferred destination.

The Uruguayan international is reported to be fed up with playing second-fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at the Parc des Princes and has fallen out with manager Laurent Blanc as a result.

This news has led to several Premier League clubs to throw their hats into the ring, not least Manchester City and Chelsea, but Cavani is believed to have his heart set on a move to the red half of Manchester.

These are sure to be welcome tidings at Old Trafford, though the proposed transfer fee will be excessive and others may have to make way for 27-year-old’s potential arrival.

The obvious choice would be Robin van Persie. Although the Dutchman fired United to the title last season and has still scored regularly when fit this term, he’s cut a dejected figure at the club during an injury-hit campaign.

Given he’s approaching his 31st birthday in August, whoever the new manager turns out to be – though Louis Van Gaal is still the heavy 2/9 favourite – will have a big decision on their hands.

Javier Hernandez has also been linked with a move away under David Moyes, but alongside England striker Danny Welbeck the pair are generally viewed as the future of the club, while Wayne Rooney is going nowhere.

If it is Van Gaal who is installed at the helm then his obvious links to RVP as his national team manager could mean he decides to offload someone else.

Whatever happens it’s a particularly positive step for all concerned with the outgoing champions that such stellar names still want to join the club, despite the lack of Champions League football there next season.
