Turning Spanish tide makes Real the easy Madrid derby victors

Published:

When Real Madrid last faced their fierce local rivals Atletico in the league, it was their seventh outing of the season and they lost 1-0.

Three weeks later they fell 2-1 to Barcelona in the Clasico and trailed their Blaugrana foes by six points in the race to be crowned league victors.

How the tide has turned. Carlo Ancelotti now prepares to do battle with Diego Simeone with a three point cushion between his Los Blancos side and the two chasing rivals, sitting as the now 8/15 favourites with Ladbrokes to win the league.

That leap to the front of the La Liga queue has come on the back of an unbeaten run of mammoth proportions, spanning four months and 27 games in all competitions.

In the Spanish top-flight they haven’t lost since that Barca defeat, some 15 games ago and have ended up victorious in 13 of those.

A short trip across Madrid and the lads from Ateltico are in a slump. Having lost just one of their opening 22 league outings, they’ve since two of their last three and have the recent 5-0 aggregate thumping at the hands of Cristiano Ronaldo and co in the Copa del Rey still fresh in their memories.

That all adds up to the 11/10 being offered on a Real win a truly delicious piece of Sunday betting pie. Especially considering the Bernabeu side have won all of their last eight trips to play Atletico in all competitions.

As a side bet, consider goals. Real have slotted 21 in their last six games in a run that reads: 3, 4, 2, 3, 3, 6. They are 23/10 to win the game with over 2.5 goals being scored and 33/10 to clear that goal barrier all by themselves.

Should they achieve it, expect those odds on winning the title to shrink even further.
