Top Premier League run-in clichés: Liverpool duo kicks things off

Published:

There are some things in football that you can always rely on, like fans scoffing pies at half-time and singing songs when they win. However, there is nothing as reliable as footballers churning out the clichés when the season enters the final straight.

Perhaps it’s the unfamiliarity of the situation they find themselves in, challenging for the Premier League title, but a few of Liverpool’s players have been among the first to pop the lid on some classic clichés about the run-in.

Residing in the dizzy surrounds of second place, but still rated as the 13/2 outsiders to lift the elusive trophy, Liverpool face a particularly tough assignment at arch rivals Manchester United next.

And ahead of their Old Trafford grudge match, the Reds Belgian onion bag-guarder, Simon Mignolet, has led with the number one run-in cliché, shortly followed by teammate Daniel Sturridge with number two.

1. “There are 10 games to go until the end of the season and we have to stay calm and focused on the next game.” Mignolet

2. “Every game’s going to be a cup final and were looking forward to the task ahead.” Sturridge

3. We’re just going to do our best in every game that comes along

4. We don’t look at the table, we can only affect what we do

5. We’re going to try and collect as many points as we can between now and the end of the season and see where we end up

6. As long as it’s mathematically possible we will fight until the end

7. This is a massive game, a real six-pointer, but even if we lose we’ll pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off

8. Some teams are already on the beach
