Spurs’ dodgy defence to ensure derby distress against Arsenal

Published:

The second instalment of Sky Sports’ Super Sunday is another of English football’s grandest fixtures and come the final whistle, recent evidence suggests it will be Arsenal fans who are left celebrating a first win over Tottenham at White Hart Lane in six attempts.

Tim Sherwood’s rapid ascension to join Chris Hughton as joint-second favourite to be the next Premier League manager to leave at 9/2 tells us all we need to know about Tottenham’s sudden nosedive in form.

A flat performance and loss to Norwich was the start of it, while an unconvincing 1-0 win over struggling Cardiff has since been followed up by a disastrous 4-0 drubbing at Chelsea and a Europa League pummelling at home to Benfica.

Suddenly the unassuming Sherwood that quietly went about picking up plenty of points early in his tenure, has been replaced by a one spitting feathers and getting involved in touchline skirmishes.

Against Chelsea, Tottenham were simply awful in defence, gifting the Blues four goals and to make matters worse they are without their trusted defensive marshal Michael Dawson for this clash.

It appears that Sherwood’s rant after that game did little to inspire his stars either, as the rot was still evident against Benfica in their 3-1 loss.

As a result title-chasing Arsenal look good value to leave White Hart Lane with the spoils at 6/4, while 19/10 on the hosts in their current state looks skinny.

The Gunners may have exited Europe at the hands of Bayern Munich, but can draw huge confidence from drawing with the German treble winners on their own turf, to follow a rousing win over Everton in the FA Cup.

However, the fact that Arsene Wenger’s charges have only kept one clean sheet from their last seven league away games, adds credence to the 19/5 on Arsenal win where both teams score.
