Pellegrini behind City push for treble success, says Sergio Aguero
Manchester City can become the first club in English top flight history to land a domestic treble of Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup trophies this year.
That is according to striker Sergio Aguero who has cited new manager Manuel Pellegrini as the main driving force behind the club’s success this term.
City already have the Capital One Cup in the bag and Ladbrokes make it a 7/2 shot that the Premier League and FA Cup titles are added by the end of the season.
Aguero believes this should be the minimum City aim for – with Champions League qualification still a possibility despite a 2-0 deficit against Barcelona – and has heaped praise on Pellegrini for getting the Sky Blues into such a position.
“Every manager is different, and with Manuel what he does is he talks a lot to all of us and treats every player the same,” he said.
“This is important. He says things to motivate us and that’s good. We’ve adapted quite quickly to his way of playing and I’m pleased as he’s given us a lot of guidance.”
City trail current leaders Chelsea by six points in the Premier League but with two games in hand and a superior goal difference could soon find themselves at the summit before the final run of games and in pole position to take Manchester United’s crown.
In the FA Cup a plum draw against last year’s beaten finalists – but this year’s Championship outfit – Wigan has all but guaranteed the Etihad outfit a place in the semi-finals of this year’s competition.
From there Arsenal look the biggest threat to City’s run for the cup but as the 6-3 win over Arsene Wenger’s men earlier this season attests, Pellegrini’s side would hold little fear of a Wembley date with the Gunners.
As such, a domestic treble looks highly probable for the blue half of Manchester but the Champions League may have to wait for another year at least.
However, odds of 200/1 could tempt many to take an outside punt on the Citizens to exceed even Aguero’s dreams and record an unprecedented quadruple.
