Neville completely right to warn off Man United shopping spree
Published:There are more than a few schools of thought when it comes to how the footballing world thinks Manchester United should right the wrongs of David Moyes’ first campaign at Old Trafford.
Whether that’s a squad overhaul, a change of manager or a shift in the Moyes philosophy, Gary Neville has a clear view on the matter.
With the Red Devils left needing to win the Champions League at 33/1 to retain their place in the competition next season, Neville is sure that whatever happens a reported £150m splurge isn’t necessarily the answer.
“It is almost as if you need to know what is wrong with the soup before you throw more ingredients in to make it better. At the moment I’m not quite sure where you start,” the England coach said.
That makes complete sense too. The £37m splashed out on Juan Mata in January was meant to be the catalyst in United’s change of fortunes after spending big on the ineffective Marouane Fellaini.
But, as the arrival of both men has shown, spending wads of cash on new recruits won’t transform United’s fortunes if they’re played out of position.
Moyes has yet to find a formation that best utilises Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Mata in the same side, with the England star playing behind Van Persie and the former Chelsea man shoved out wide.
That’s left Fellaini to be play a deep-lying midfield role Moyes didn’t even field the Belgian in during their time together at Everton.
The lack of pace in the side is also stark but, unless Moyes drops one of the aforementioned front three, finding room in the side for flyers like Antonio Valencia or Danny Welbeck is a tough task.
If anything, signing the Premier League pair has only confused the Scot further and, until he has a clear strategy in place, any further signings are only set to make matters worse.
