Mourinho opens Chelsea door to Real Madrid centre-back
It looks like Jose Mourinho’s intentions to build a long-lasting dynasty at Chelsea this time around are not in the least bit shallow as his latest comments indicate he‘s lining up another young centre-back to join his Stamford Bridge project this summer.
Having already agreed a deal to bring St Etienne’s 19-year-old central defender, Kurt Zouma, to west London in the summer, it now looks like he could be joined by French compatriot Rafael Varane.
Varane, only 20 himself, was signed by then Real Madrid manager Mourinho as a teenager from Lens and after being used sparingly in his first campaign went on to make 28 appearances under the Portuguese last season.
However, after missing the beginning of Los Merengues’ 2013/14 campaign Varane has struggled to break-up the defensive duopoly of Sergio Ramos and Pepe at the heart of their defence, making just eight appearances all-told.
This clearly hasn’t gone unnoticed by Mourinho, who decided to come out in the press with some pretty powerful praise, hinting that he would welcome Varane with open arms at Chelsea.
“I think he is the best young central defender in the world. Already I think he’s the best,” he told the Sun.
Given David Luiz could well be Barcelona-bound and John Terry is in the twilight at Stamford Bridge, this move feels like it has wings.
We’ve already seen Mourinho move to bring previous signings, such as Nemanja Matic and Samuel Eto’o to the Bridge, and although Madrid are certain to have their own ideas, such a public flirtation feels like the start of an official courtship.
Chelsea are the 1/1 title favourites with Ladbrokes and whether Mourinho admits it or not, the current crop are definitely the ones to beat as the title run-in takes shape.
