Meet the three summer freebies Liverpool can play Moneyball with

Published:

The links between Liverpool and Boston Red Sox owner John Henry and the money-saving baseball theories dramatised in the film Moneyball are yet to filter into the Reds’ transfer dealings.

But following recent comments by Brendan Rodgers over the club’s summer transfer policy, it could finally be the time for Moneyball to emerge on Merseyside.

Speaking about what brings a club success, Rodgers said: “Money can’t buy that. Teams spend a billion quid and it does not guarantee anything. We will be in the market for good and top players but there is more to it than that.”

With Liverpool 10/3-shots to win this season’s Premier League we earmark three potential top-class free transfers Rodgers could snap up to Moneyball his way to next year’s title:

Ashley Cole

Having made just 12 top-flight appearances for Chelsea this season, Cole’s time in west London looks to be ticking to a finale.

With his contract expiring at the end of this season, Liverpool could find worse players to fill their problematic left-back spot with than a three-time Premier League and double European trophy winner.

Tiago

Lucas Leiva’s injury problems combined with a lack of trust in Luis Alberto has left Liverpool a little light in central-midfield.

The former Chelsea marauder, now playing at high-flying Atletico Madrid, would be a superb addition to the Anfield engine room.

From his 15 La Liga appearances this season Tiago hasn’t shown any signs of a dip in form, averaging 50.9 passes per game and 2.8 interceptions – a style that would perfectly mesh with the Rodgers way.

Jeremy Menez

If there’s one thing more guaranteed than the setting sun, then it’s Liverpool purchasing a left winger next season. The expiring contract of Paris Saint-Germain’s Jeremy Menez would be a perfect solution.

Out of the picture this term, the Frenchman has been a top performer for the Ligue 1 giants in years gone by, scoring 12 goals and assisting 19 more in 63 appearances for the club prior to this campaign.
