Man United need to fill Frenchman’s shoes as Inter exit looms

Published:

It’s widely perceived that Patrice Evra’s time treading the Old Trafford boards is nearing its curtain call as the latest reports indicate the Frenchman is set to follow teammate Nemanja Vidic to Inter this summer.

At 32 Evra’s time patrolling the left-hand flank was always going to be under threat with his contract running down this season.

A miserable campaign for all involved at Manchester United has seemingly put the kybosh on any hopes of an extension to the Frenchman’s deal, while Evra has emerged as a target for Inter and their new owner who seems intent on raiding the Premier League.

The news of the Serie A club’s interest comes out ahead of a critical week in United’s season, where they face arch rivals Liverpool in the Premier League before trying to overturn a 2-0 deficit against OIympiacos in the Champions League.

David Moyes’ side are rated as the narrowest of 7/5 faves to keep their wafer thin hopes of the top four alive by beating Liverpool in their televised clash, which is increasingly likely to be Evra’s last run out in the English Clasico.

A whole host of names have been linked with potential moves to Old Trafford this summer as Moyes attempts to reconstruct a title-challenging side and with Evra almost certain to go, Luke Shaw has to be at the top of any list the Scot is compiling.

The likes of Jan Vertonghen and Juventus’ Martin Careces are talented left-footed players, but are predominantly centre-backs and will not offer the requisite raiding qualities they will miss in Evra’s absence.

Meanwhile, Shaw is a player in the same mould as Evra, but at just 18 can offer United a solution for the foreseeable future.
