Liverpool’s planned bid for Chelsea star could solve big problem

Title-chasing Liverpool may launch a shock bid to land Chelsea’s out-of-favour left-back Ashley Cole, according to reports in the Daily Star.

The Anfield club are currently 16/5 to land a first Premier League title this season and while the acquisition of Cole would have to wait until the summer, the move would strengthen a Liverpool side intent on remaining near the top of the pile long into the future.

While 33-year-old Cole has had his doubters recently there’s no doubting the pedigree of a defender capped 107 times by England.

And with Pools boss Brendan Rodgers eager to shore up the left side of his defence and provide competition for youngster Jon Flanagan, the swoop for Cole would appear to make perfect sense.

The former Arsenal star is rumoured to be keen on re-uniting with Rodgers too, having become familiar with the Northern Irishman when he was a youth team coach and reserve manager at Chelsea.

With game time limited this term under Jose Mourinho an escape to Merseyside has suddenly become an attractive option although there could be competition for the defender’s signature from elsewhere.

The lure of the MLS may also prove tempting with New York Red Bulls reportedly eager to snap up the decorated defender while Real Madrid have also been said to be interested in Cole with talk of a reunion with former Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti adding some weight to that speculation.

Meanwhile, Cole’s current club are 4/9 to beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in their upcoming Premier League fixture, with the hosts 13/2 to take all three points and the draw priced at 10/3 with Ladbrokes.

The Pensioners currently sit top of the table one point above Liverpool, however 3/4 title favourites Manchester City have two games in hand on the west London side.
