Published:Trying to get to the bottom of Manchester United’s expected summer transfer activity is a tricky task, but among the plethora of names linked with the ailing champions, three in particular stand out as likely silly-season purchases.
Each of them currently ply their trade at different Bundesliga clubs, with Freiburg’s young centre-half Matthias Ginter first up for your perusal.
The 20-year-old came on for his Germany debut in the second-half of Die Mannscaft’s recent 1-0 friendly win over Chile, although coach Joachim Low cannot have learned much from his new cap’s minute or so on the pitch.
Ginter starred in his first full season in Freiburg’s first team last term, which saw the unfashionable Breisgau outfit finish just four points behind fifth-placed Schalke.
Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund are among a host of clubs keen on Ginter, but the 6ft 3in stopper is thought to favour a move to United above all others.
Moyes has also been heavily linked with BVB forward Marco Reus, who’s currently following up a 19-goal first season at the Westfalenstadion with 13 in his first 30 games of this campaign.
The 24-year-old wouldn’t come cheap – figures north of £40m have been bandied about regarding Dortmund’s valuation – but with striker Robert Lewandowski’s departure already confirmed, Reus may feel a move away from his local club will be necessary for his career progression.
Both of these young talents would improve United’s squad considerably, but by far the most prevalent rumour regarding the Red Devils’ summer wishlist emanates from Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena, where classy midfielder Toni Kroos refuses to agree a new contract.
The latest word from the football grapevine is that Real Madrid have cooled their interest in Kroos, leaving Moyes with a potentially clear run at the East Germany-born playmaker – also 24 – at the end of this term.
Kroos’ brother Felix – who plays for Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga – has stated that the siblings have talked about Toni’s potential move to Old Trafford and with United among the few sides who could meet his reported £250,000 a week wage demands, this whisper will continue to do the rounds.
