Champions League bound Liverpool ready bid for Spurs stopper
Published:There are a number of ramifications that come from missing out on, or landing in, the Champions League places and for two of this season’s chasing pack where they end up could define their summer transfer business.
Tottenham currently sit outside the ringed fence of the promised land, four points off Manchester City in fifth place.
They rate as the 5/1 outsiders to crash the current incumbent’s European tour party and should they fail, it’s likely any of City, Chelsea, Liverpool and, to a lesser extent, Arsenal will come sniffing around their star men.
Hugo Lloris has already stated that he’d have to think about his career plan should the Lilywhites fall shy of their Champions League ambitions and now Jan Vertonghen has followed suit.
That’s alerted the defensively weak Reds to the potential of nabbing a replacement for one of their error-prone back line and, should Liverpool return to the European dynasty and Tottenham fail, are prepared to launch a bid.
Brendan Rodgers’ outfit looked nailed on to reacquaint themselves with the competition they won in 2005 at 1/12, and the Northern Irishman will know his side’s current defensive set up won’t cut the mustard among the elite.
Having shipped the same amount of goals as Hull in the league this term an upgrade on the likes of Kolo Toure will surely be on Rodgers’ shopping list this summer.
With the Belgian playing his part in keeping clean sheets in five of the last seven games he’s started for Tottenham, Vertonghen certainly wouldn’t be a bad option.
This isn’t the first time the 26-year-old has been on a Premier League rival’s radar. Former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp urged the Citizens to strengthen their defence by signing Vertonghen in January.
Although nothing came of it, a failure to seal Champions League football will surely have Spurs worried over their ability to keep hold of the centre-back.
