Arsenal freebie could become latest traitor to flee to City

Champions League football is often a main attraction for footballers looking to switch clubs. But for Arsenal players it’s not always enough to keep them, as the lure of money or silverware is a far bigger pull.

For Bacary Sagna it seems that both are his motivation for stalling on signing a new deal with the Gunners, with rumours that he’ll jump ship to Manchester City on a free transfer at the end of the campaign gathering pace.

He wouldn’t be the first Emirates-escaper to find his way to the Etihad though, as Emmanuel Adebayor, Kolo Toure, Gael Clichy and Samir Nasri all plotted the same career path before him to differing success.

The Arsenal chiefs have already offered Sagna a two-year extension on his current deal, but he’s holding out for a longer one as well as an improved salary, according to rumours.

Inter Milan are keen on securing the Frenchman’s services, but with a preference to stay in the Premier League also high on Sagna’s pop-star-long rider, it’s the Citizens who are in pole position to claim the diva as their own.

Having lost 6-0 to Chelsea in Arsene Wenger’s 1,000th game in charge, Arsenal’s only hope of a first trophy in what seems a lifetime lies in the FA Cup, a competition the Gunners are 4/9 to win.

Meanwhile, Manuel Pellegrini’s debut campaign at the City helm has already seen him land the Capital One Cup, with the Premier League trophy 5/4 to follow close behind.

Pablo Zabaleta has the City right back position locked firmly in the highest cupboard at the Etihad, well out of the reach of deputy Micah Richards.

But should Sagna get the deal he’s bursting for, with the lure of silverware an added sweetener, replacing Richards as the Argentine’s understudy is likely to be a consequence Sagna will gladly take.
